Server trip

A room of serversWe are back, after our little trip to take the new server - Lady Yuna - to the Rapid Switch building near Slough.

We headed off on Tuesday evening. I had a busy day at the Bideford drop-in, and Chicken had a all out manic day at work so we didn’t get going until just after 18:00. We ended up making brilliant time, though, as the link road was very quiet and so was the motorway, we even got through Bristol quickly. We stayed at the Reading M4 Travelodge, which was clean and fine.

In the morning we got up at 8:30, but didn’t get out of there until after 10:00. We got to the new server home at about 11:00 and then everything went pear shaped. Apparently three weeks or so was “confirming too late” to be able to have the data-centre tour Chicken was hoping for and to add annoyance to it there was a down-right rude idiot of a guy who worked for the landlords, Blue Square. I gave him a bit of a sharp reply to his rudeness, we handed over Yuna and headed off to Reading.

We went to look at the outside of our first flat together, near Palmer Park (sadly, the time when we lived there was mostly lost when Chick’s accidentally wiped all of our saved stuff - songs, blogs, etc). It looked the same. Then I went to my old volunteer work place, Books for Amnesty, and saw my good friend Susanne, which was absolutely great. It was so nice to catch up, as we always used to work together at the shop.

After a petrol stop we hit the motorway and made our way to Bristol. We had some lunch with Leah at Cribbs Causeway and a quick look round the shops before making the rest of the journey home.

A long trip, but a longer one awaits us the weekend after next, when we are off to Suffolk. Anyhoo, stuff to do, people to see…

That picture shows one horrible server room! This is more what they should look like…
