Revolutionary Rants

Because Everything’s Political

I heard on the Grapevine

Warcraft Frozen ThroneAll quiet on the South Western front. We are planning a quiet weekend. Was expecting to go to the volunteering “do” at the beach tonight, but nothing has been heard, so guess it is not going ahead. Planning a quiet weekend. Chicken and Alex are taking the server up to Slough on Wednesday, poor old Wagon R will be feeling the miles this next month!

A couple of decent jobs to apply for, reading Left Bank, A history of Tractors in Ukrainian and A Tragedy Waiting to Happen: the Chaotic Life of Brendan O’Donnell. The latter is bringing back a few memories for me, not least of the day it all happened, when Al and I had to stay in the house. I had my first ever cup of tea that day (I always loved coffee, just not tea), it had one sugar in it. Dad spent a lot of the day reading to us, to keep us occupied, whilst we worried about Mum being out and about in Ennis.

We are still playing too much Warcraft III, although we did pause to watch The Restaurant last night, which is proving quite amusing. Some of the people are completely clueless – and highly irritating. A good mix for viewing enjoyment… Sadly the same cannot be said of Big Brother 8, which we haven’t been watching at all. As you will know, we normally like a bit of BB but we just haven’t been gripped by this year’s show at all.

The very noisy holidaying neighbours are just packing up to leave – hooray. Might get a bit of quiet this weekend with babies falling out of bed and screaming at 1:20am, shouting/crying all day and people thundering up/down stairs. Grumpy? Moi?

Just got my Grapevine alumni magazine from the University of not as good as Oxbridge and don’t we have a chip on our shoulder about it. It is bloody awful, plus all the Political Philosophy alumni mentioned seem to have dropped dead at 45…

£25,000?!?!?!!?

Some bears in weird gearThis article fills me with hope. For, if we reverse what is suggests, then Mr C and I should be alright. Our wedding cost a little bit over £1,000. That’s a pretty good saving, of £24,000, on your “average” UK wedding, then. Almost worthy of my beloved reduced isle in the capitalist shops…

Blue Tuesday

Princess Mononoke - Spirit of the ForestBack to reality. Chicken has cycled off to work and I am shortly off to Bideford to volunteer. From now on I am only volunteering on a Tuesday over in Biddy, not in Barnstaple.

The rest of the weekend was good. On Saturday we had a trip to evil-capitalist-bike-car-type shop to get a radio that allows us to plug in out ipods, which will be good for the long journeys we have coming up. I also washed the car, whilst Chicken put in said radio. Sunday saw Mr C do some computer fixing and I visited my Nan’s, we re-watched Princess Mononoke and cooked. Yesterday we had a nice walk in the park, baths and played a good four hours of War Craft III.

It was great to have the extra-long weekend, especially as we have a lot of long journeys and busy times coming up next month. We have Mr C’s birthday (with a meal at the local award winning pub, the Grove Inn), followed by a drive to Suffolk for a wedding, followed by a drive to Bristol airport and a flight to Nice the weekend after. Lots of travel… One more normal weekend before our busy time, though.

Oh well, stuff to do before I go…

I like to ride my bicycle

Brauton Burrows dunesWe had an absolutely fantastic day yesterday. When Mr C returned from work we headed out straight away on our bikes peddling down the Tarka Trail on the Barnstaple to Braunton side of the estuary.

We stopped off at the Tarka Inn for some lunch and a shandy, before heading off again to Braunton and down the toll road to Braunton Burrows. We crossed the dunes (quite difficult of bikes, in the sand!) to the very far end of Saunton Sands. I braved a swim, but Chicken just paddled, as it was too cold for him. Then we turned tail and rolled off home. It proved quite difficult as my peddle had decided to fall off – or to start falling off, to be more accurate. Chicken was very gallant and rode my bike and we made running repairs on the way back.

We then had a hot bath to help our aching limbs and had a nice glass of Kir Royal whilst watching The IT Crowd. Smashing.

After a very long sleep, we are now relaxing. Breakfast, lots of coffee and now Mr C is in another very hot bath. No plans for today, just seeing where the wind takes us. Thinking about our Yorkshire holiday, which I am stupidly over excited about. I can’t wait to return to Whitby and see the abbey, and I am perhaps even more excited about going back to Robin Hood’s Bay, where we will be staying. It brings me back to childhood, I suppose, hence the excitement.

Well, time to glance over the papers before heading to the bath.

Banking

No go areaThe Bank Holiday madness begins once again. The roads are already pretty busy by the looks of things and the evil-capitalist-shop-with-a-blue-sign was like Bedlam. The M5 up at Taunton was down to one lane at 8:00am thing morning, so goodness knows what it will be like now.

The annoying thing about living somewhere like Devon is that you can’t enjoy it as much as you would like on weekends like this because the roads are full and everywhere is full of visitors to the region.

Oh well, never mind, the sun is shining, Chicken has three and a half days off and we can enjoy Devon all year round not just on over busy weekends after evil hot drives.

We haven’t got anything much planned. Possibly a trip up to the caravan, perhaps a bike ride, some computer fixing, nice food, lots of sleep, a glass of Kir Royal, being happy.

Ah well, time for Chicken to get back, here comes the weekend!

The Simpsons Movie

HomerLast night Chicken and I used the Orange Wednesdays offer to go and see The Simpsons Movie. Actually, despite the awful shite the series has descended in to these days, it was quite funny. At 87 minutes it hardly seemed much longer than a normal episode and we wouldn’t have been thrilled had we paid out the full £12, but at half price we won’t grumble.

It had the great one liners and faint American irony of the earlier series and actually had Homer as the original evil bastard of a husband/father/citizen that he once was for a while, before once again giving him a sentimental sheen to finish. Still, it was funny whilst it lasted. The lack of the extended cast, in all but short spurts, was a shame, with the presence of Patti and Selma and Sideshow Bob particularity showing.

The plot seemed a little too organised for The Simpsons, with annoying and pointless additions like Lisa’s love interest Colin (why do Yanks insist on trying to do “Oirish” accents?)

Anyhoo, it made us laugh, but I can hardly remember any of the jokes now. The only one I can was regarding Homer and whipping and I only remember that because Chicken and I laughed really loudly and no one else in the cinema did, just all looked round at us…

Tough

The green menaceThis will sound a tad Eddie Izzard, so sorry. Why is it that avocados refuse, refuse to ripen (I know, I know, but them near bananas or wrap them in brown paper bags) and then go “bluuuuuup” and turn in to grey mush that upsets the tum?

I have had a bag of the green menaces for a week now and they are still harder than a Mansfield chav… I am missing my salad wraps of a lunch time, they are just not right without the greenies… Sob. I imagine tomorrow they will all have gone “blurrrrp” by about 11am!

Watching the most stupid programme ever, Eat Yourself Thin. It has awful presenters called things like “Gizzi”, who happily cry ‘Oh whow Anastasia, that looks so delish!’ Basically the they cook slightly less calorific versions of vastly caloried things like chocolate cake or takeaway. Lets just say it isn’t only Mr C who is looking forward to the autumn return of Nigella…

Nothing much to report, Mum’s off to Bulgaria tomorrow, took her to the station today (she’s not going by train all the way, of course, just to Reading). Volunteering goes on, busier today. Chicken works on. Applications go in. Our trip to Yorkshire is booked and planned. And, in the small things that I mention to finish posts catagory, I managed to cook Chicks a John Burton Race recipe tonight. I am quite proud.

Name pain

Yes, a whole seperate entity to my beloved partner, crazy isn’t it?My name is Jessica Sains. Jess. Sains. Ms is my title, if required.

Not Jess Boot. We haven’t even both gone double barreled as it stinks of some sort of fox-hunting elite type crap to us.

Certainly not Mrs C. Boot.

Why is this so difficult for people to get? It is like we are living in f**king 1954 still or something…

Deliver Us From Evil and to Rockham beach

Yallop bookToday has been an almost perfect day. We woke up early (8:00am or so, early for a Saturday), rested and fresh after a long nights sleep (we couldn’t face David Gest on Friday Night Project). After breakfast and a bath I came downstairs to discover a book lying near the post box. My Mum had brought me a book about the Yorkshire Ripper (Deliver Us From Evil by David Yallop) which I have been hunting all over for for yonks! Very exciting, some people have been charging around £200 for it on Amazon, so it is brilliant she could source it and get it. A lovely, lovely gift.

Then, shortly after, Mr C and I drove to the caravan and walked down to Rockham beach. We swam in the sea, which was fantastic and not too cold after you got yourself immersed. We walked back up and on the return drive stopped for a bitter/bitter shandy in the sun shine. Smashing stuff.

Now, stuffed with tea, it is time for a relaxing evening!

A week in brief

Again, nothing much to report, but life is busy. The sun is still shining, it really is summer at last, but rain is forecast for the weekend. Oh well, at least we have had a couple of weeks of real summer. I now put sunblock on every morning without fail, as my back still stings after my mishap on Croyde beach.

Since my last post on Tuesday, this week, so far, has included child care, volunteering, more child care, waiting in for the new server to arrive, brotherly birthdays, beginning to read Tender is the Night and watching too much Rick Stein. Finally Friday is here and I just want to be in the sunshine with Mr C…
