Revolutionary Rants

Because Everything’s Political

Manic Street Sunday

New albumOooh, the Manics are on Andrew Marr. Excellent. Not only that but Nicky Wire was slightly dismissive of John Reid. Even more excellent. Plus Reid refused to actually rule himself out of the leadership race. Interesting.

Less good is that I have woken up with a swollen eye. It has been itchy for weeks now and I even visited the doctor about it (who said it would ‘go away’). Never mind, but it is annoyance.

Nothing much planned for today and a very busy week so don’t expect much from me.

Sick as a parrot

A pear, ’tis.Ahhh. A lie-in, a bath, a very strong coffee drunk from the Finnish cups (minus handles, so do they count as cups? What a question for a Saturday…) Aram sent us as a wedding gift. The calm before the storm? Perhaps.

Mum has pulled her back out. Chicken is ill and not sleeping right. Nan is also ill. Emily is feeling not-so-good post-operation (but gluing has re-commenced, which must be a good sign, one hopes). The sheep have fly-strike.

But, the sun is shining, a childhood friend has got photo ID and will be able to join us from Ireland and shopping at Lidl produced a great amount of tasty treats.

More bad than good? Perhaps. Am I rambling whilst terrified everything is going pear-shaped? Definitely.

Oh dear, I am listening to Exit Music (From a Film) the most depressing track ever… Where is Here Comes the Sun? Quickly now!

Party hard?

North Devon Registry OfficeCrap.

Eight days to go.

When did it get so close? Crumbs.

Not that it is a big deal - we are already “married” as far as we are concerned; it just happened, over a frozen mozzarella pizza in the garden of my second-year house, over pints of snakebite and blackcurrant, over the long, hot sunny days of my work placement.

The fear is the logistics, getting it all done and hoping everyone has a good time. That’s the difficult bit, having a successful party.

Will people enjoy it? Only time will tell. A weekend to look forward to, altho’ neither of us feels well, still.

Solo-efforts

Still feeling pretty chuffed. It was pouring last night so I made my first ever solo-drive to collect Mr C and bike from work so that we could head to the evil capitalist shop with a orange sign [sorry, Charles] shops. It certainly felt pretty weird to be driving off all on my tod, I can tell you. We celebrated my - eventual - success with a curry and a Beringer!

Chicken feels rotten, but has gamely headed off to work. I have more of a cold/cough today, after a sore throat day yesterday.

Now, as you know, I love my lists, so here is a list/questionnaire type blog thing!

Pick out a scar you have and explain how you got it

Other than pox marks, the only scar I can think of is a little tiny one of my right temple. The way I got it was rather odd. I was swotting for my A Levels in my brother’s sitting room in Mansfield. It was sunny and my sis-in-law decided to cut the lawn. I remained inside, with the French windows open to sit with my sleeping two-week old niece. Shortly, I heard a slight clunk and looked up, I saw a small object - a bee? - flying towards me. I shut my eyes, waiting for the impact of the bee and instead felt a whack on the side of my head. Wow, a hard, hard thing had hit me and when I opened my eyes all I could see was red. I was flipping Carrie! My nephew referred to it as my ‘bleed’ and although it was only a tiny nick from a stone sheered under the mower the blood was impressive. Not as impressive asit flying from a raised lawn, through French windows and hitting my head directly on the sofa, but hey…

What is on the walls in your room?

Boring generic paint, a Amelie film poster, “space cat” (a picture I did as a 4-5 year old), and pictures of Che Guevara and an “Elvis dog”.

What does your phone look like?

I have a grey old Nokia and a Binetone gray thing.

What music do you listen to?

Manic Street Preaching - always. They were my first driving track, yesterday! Heehee. Ironic as I don’t think any of them can drive…

What is your current desktop picture?

On Big Wig it is dementors surrounding Hogwarts, on Gromit it is the Eiffel Tower at night.

What do you want more than anything right now?

A labrador and a decent job.

Do you believe in gay marriage?

I am not sure I believe in marriage as a concept, but I think any people in relationships who wish to commit should have the same “rights” as any others.

What time were you born?

At about 2:00 am, I think.

Are your parents still together?

Why, yes.

What are you listening to?

The ever annoying Jamie Cullam waxing lyrical about Ella Fitzgerald on the Beeb news.

Do you get scared of the dark?

No.

The last person to make you cry?

Not sure.

What is your favourite cologne/perfume?

I like the one Mr C wears, which is some designer crap Al brougt him, I also like mine that Mr C brought me.
What kind of hair/eye colour do you like on the opposite sex?

Not bothered, generally. I am usually more interested in noses…

Do you like pain killers?

Yes, sadly, As Winston Smith said, it is impossible to wish to increase your pain at any time…
Are you too shy to ask someone out?

No.

Fave pizza topping

Capers.
If you could eat anything right now, what would it be?

Right now… tarramosalta on toast.

Who was the last person you made mad?

Mr C, by saying that Tintin was fascistic!

Is anyone in love with you?

Apparently so. Poor sod.

At last!

PassedI HAVE PASSED MY DRIVING TEST!!!!!!!!! YESSSSSSSSSSS! YYEESSSSSSSSSSS!! YYYEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! I am so, so pleased. It was my forth time and I got six minors. I did a perfect reverse park, which I have never ever done. I also had a turn in the road. Oh, and the old emergency stop. Very, very chuffed - still sinking in that I won’t have to do it again! Hooray, now the great selling out to look forward to!

Falling on my head like a memory

April has arrived. Not literally, of course, as it is almost May (yes, the great sell-out is less than two weeks away), but in the “April showers” sense. So far we have had almost wall-to-wall sunshine and breezy, light days. Not so this morning, the weather is gray and grumpy with a fair dash of moisture. Oh well, it can’t be sunny all the time, can it? What would we talk about if it did? Conversation would grind to a halt…

The party was a success, with a bouncy castle (Chicken and I didn’t go on too much) and plenty of cake. The kids seemed to have a good time and we got a chance to test our story in the village hall, it sounded brilliant, which has saved us almost £200 on a PA system.

Afterwards my cold/cough/sore throat thing came back with a vengeance, so I am off to the doctors later, as after a week and a half I am getting annoyed.

President elect

The box of the ballotsIt is the first ballot in the French Presidential election today (the second, we have just realised, is the day before we arrive in Paris for our holiday, so the city may be nursing a hang-over the day of our arrival!). I am hoping against hope for a Mme Royal victory, but I doubt she has a chance. It has been an interesting election so far, and it is good that Le Pen seems to have been nudged out of it.

My cough is still annoying, but improved by actually sleeping a bit last night.  Yesterday I felt awful, and we headed off in to town to get Chicken some shoes for the wedding (what else?) and other bits. Today, we are off to my niece’s sixth birthday party. It may not be quite 26.2 miles, but it’ll still be a busy day!

Another Gunner gone

The ex-chairpersonBye-bye David Dein, then. Can’t say as I’ll miss him much. I will give up on the Gunners if we get brought by a Yank, tho’. It is all too corporate these days… I can no longer imagine myself smiling proudly as my daughter or son (should there ever be such a creature) cheers on the Gooners through their first F A Cup final (the kid’s, not Arsenal’s, obviously), but I can’t help but hope that someone will still buy them a ‘I’m the best dribbler at Highbury’ bib (I refuse to name the new stadium by its “official” title, another proof of the capitalisation of footie).

Today is sunny again, meaning no need for a coat as I: hung-up washing, paid for the Registry Office, did some stuff for Addaction, brought hair grips and spray, went to the library and purchased pink birthday wrapping paper. Glory be. Indeed.

Glory not be that the recyclers haven’t been… Damn them.

Class, equality and county town

The tiolet???Did you know that it is apparently more “upper-class” to say ‘what?’ rather than ‘pardon?’

Well, it is, apparently. Chicken and I were saying that, as with most people I should imagine, we were taught that saying ‘what?’ to someone if you missed what they were saying it was pretty rude… You should also say ‘loo’ or ‘lavatory’ rather than ‘toilet’. How very odd. Well, the words”upper-class” do kind of cover “very odd”, I suppose.

This article is interesting, I wrote a similar type thing in our student paper in my third year and got a nasty letter sent in telling me that most feminists don’t want equality but actually want to take over the world. No, that’s just me… Still, a relevant article. I particularly like the idea that liking one’s body is a revolutionary act, especially in the current climate.

Off to Exeter today to get the last few bits we can get prior to right up close to the wedding (decorating the hall, doing the food, sorting the ale all have to be left until the last minute). Going on the train with my Mum. It is lovely and sunny today, which is always a bonus.

Enjoying the new series of Missing on the Beeb. Dunno why it is on at 9:15am rather than prime-time as it is an excellent programme, examining the investigations in to missing persons in Hackney and elsewhere in the country.

Anyhoo, need to ring the registry office to arrange to pay the fee ahead of time (a new policy, they say) so, toodle-loo for now or ta-ra me ducks!

Right or wrong?

We the people…Once again the “right” to bear arms comes back to bite the American nation in the bum. I heard the editor of Guns Weekly on the news this morning saying that no ‘law-abiding American citizen’ (empathisis on American) could have got hold of a gun in this way. But surely the kids at Columbine were American citizens who got hold of guns at a gun fair (meaning they didn’t need to have federal background checks)? Almost straight away they were claiming this was a man of ‘Asian appearance’ so I can imagine the reason the gun person got from killing two people in one campus building to killing 30 or more other in another campus building was because the police were looking for someone who appeared to be a “terrorist”… Lets just hope it doesn’t turn out to be a Jean-Charles de Menezes situation.

The shocked students keep saying ‘this is a gun-free campus’; it seems kind of scary to me that they need to make campuses “gun-free” at all. Thankfully this was not necessary at Huddersfield. Probably, I am thinking, because we don’t think it is our constitutional right to have a gun…
