Because Everything’s Political

The last day of half-term

Thought that this article might be interesting to people who were asking me about Addaction, the service I work for.

I have been over with my neice and nephew today and then they came over to our house for a bit so that Mum, Emily and I could have a quick tiara shop. We have found some nice head bands for the girls. Also, our rings are already ready, in three weeks rather than the expected six to eight, so that’s great news. We will go to see them tomorrow, if we can be bothered, as tomorrow is a massive relax day for us after our busy weekend last week. On Sunday we are doing cake related business and some computer fixing (well, I’m not but you-know-who [no, not Voldemort] is).

Ah, well, time to start the relaxing!

Day-tripper

Saunton SandsI am off out for an apportionment today and of course it is pouring. Typical. It is sunny on the days you don’t need to venture out, but now… Sod’s law I suppose…

Yesterday I headed out on a half-term trip with my niece, nephew, mum and brother. After a brief trip to evil capitalist shop, we headed out to Ilfracombe for some lunch and a go on the slots (I think this must be a northern thing, really, as the slots are very meager at the seaside resorts here (other than Westward Ho!). We then went to attempted to fly a kite (failed) and walked on the beach at Saunton Sands. I had not been before and it was very nice. Sadly, a man at Woolacombe beach had a less successful visit (to say the least…) as he got in to trouble with his surf canou and died. We saw the rescue helicopter but as it is always around we thought nothing of it, really… Very sad indeed.

Anyhoo, gotta go.

A spammy weekend

John Cleese’s [God’s] feetThe weekend was very pleasant, but also very, very tiring! Our journeys were decidedly straight-forward, with nothing but a five minute delay on setting out from Barnstaple to get in our path. We enjoyed a pint outside Reading station and were briefly nostalgic in a ‘glad we don’t still live here’ kind of way before Charles picked us up and we returned to his home in Buckinghamshire.

On Saturday we headed to London (seeing the new Wembley stadium from the train, which is looking great) and met up with Chicken’s other brother Jim and his family. We had a look round the V&A and then went over to the Science Museum. Then, after the Northiam Boots headed off, Mr C, Charles and I walked through Hyde Park, had a tea in Soho, a look round the National Portrait Gallery and had a pint beofre heading to the Palace Theatre for Spamalot. Although I am not a Python person - or a musical person - it was very silly and Chicken laughed and laughed, which is enough for me! It was a lovely present, that’s for sure.

The stay with Charles was nice, we had a lovely couple of meals at his local pub/resturant, which is a fish based establishment; as well as sighting Jarvis Cocker in the cafe he recommended in London.

Today we are home again and Chicky is back at work and I had a day of looking after my niece and nephew, who are on half-term. Tomorrow I have my voluntary stuff, so busy, busy.

Masters awarded

MA GraduateJust a quick post because I am very happy: I was awarded my Masters. I got a good pass. So, now I am a BA (Hons), MA.

Very pleased! Anyhow, we’re off later to Charles’, so I will be low on the posts over the weekend - don’t cry to much!

Don’t stone my house, stone Joss Stone!

Throwing stonesSome little sh*ts threw stones at the back of our house yesterday. Gave me a real fright, featuring a big jump, when the stones rocketed off the the back wall (as they failed to hit their apparent target, the bathroom window). We will have to hope they don’t come back, I suppose, as we quite like having a fully functioning window in the shower area…

Mr Chicken’s training has been put back a couple of weeks as he needs a higher level. He’ll be going mid-March now. Still, we are off to London this Saturday and travelling off to Buckinghamshire via Reading tomorrow afternoon. We are really looking forward to seeing Chicken’s brother, sister-in-law and especially his neices who we haven’t seen for ages. We are hoping to take a “flight” on the London Eye and have a veggie Indian as well as seeing Spamalot.

That Kilroy-Silk complaint is now being covered by the BBC… For goodness sake. Various commentators claim jeans looked better in the shop than at home over a delighted debate on the red sofa. Must logically be dodgy mirrors, of course!

We watched the Brits, in between flicking over to see the Arsenal Bolton game, which we won 1-3 in the end, with a sneaky goal in the last few seconds of extra time. There were scary mentions of how 1996 was eleven years ago and half the stars were the same people as were there in ‘96 (Oasis, Jarvis, Take That) and the other half scary new people. Muse won a gong, which would good, but Snow Patrol were looked over, which wasn’t. The Arctic Monkeys won a couple, I just don’t them - dressed as Dorothy or otherwise. And Lilly Allen did “do a Craig David” as she feared. Ha ha. The ghastly Joss Stone was the most embarrassing moment of the evening, even more so than the Russell Brand jokes that dropped like lead balloons all around. She wandered round rambling on about ‘big love’ with a fake American drawl and then tried to sing like Amy Winehouse. I can’t stand her…

Anyhoo, enough rambling from me, also, I have a meeting at Addaction and then i need to go in to town. So, may post tomorrow but don’t expect much after that until Monday.

Valentine’s Day (what an imaginative title for today)

Funny valentineI just got my first ever Valentine’s day card! Yes, it was from my lovely and it was worth waiting twenty-five years for! Well, it is only the four years that Mr Chicken hasn’t got me a card, but over the other years I also failed to get one as well!!! Can’t imagine why…Heehee. Anyhoo, we have cards and we’re cooking a lush salmon pasta dish for our tea and this is the extent of the capitalist pandering in our house this 14th!

I am waiting for my Masters results, as the University of York has informed me that the exam board sat last week and our results will be sent this… I can’t beleive it has taken so long, but hey. Still no sign of the damned envelope, the post just came bringing an official looking apistle for me for the second day - that was not my results. Ho-hum.

I am being an un-official receptionist today at Addaction, as there is some interviewing going on.

Permatan madness

Just as you think Robert Kilroy-Silk has disappeared back in to his own private orange insanity he comes out with things like this! I must admit I have never noticed that M&S mirrors make people look slimmer, but, then again, I rarely buy anything from M&S anyway… The other interesting story today about the BNP, with a former party candidate allegedly having had a large amount of explosives in his house and wanting to shoot Mr Blair. Crumbs. Not that we knew they were all nutters anyway, but hey…

Been volunteering at Barnstaple Poverty Action Group (BPAG) today and Chicken has discovered he will be training next week in London, so i will home alone! But, now I have some pork chops and potato and mustard rosti to prepare.

A list

This is another of those meme things… Goodness knows where they appear from, but hey, it gives me something to post about. (Well, as well as this amusing article about the evil fruad that is Gillian McKeith!)

Three things that scare me: thunder, enclosed spaces and flying

Three people who make me laugh: Eddie Izzard, Justin Lee Collins and Jo Brand

Three things I love: Mr Chicken, my dog Beano, my family

Three things I hate: The BNP, capitalism, Matt Dawson

Three things I don’t understand: Venn diagrams, fashion (or, rather, why people follow it..) and why people like Matt Dawson

Three things on my desk: Everything Must Go 10th Anniversary Edition, a photo of Mr C and a pad of post-its

Three things I can do: Write esoteric essays that no one will ever read, tell you all sorts of useless trivia about films and give you an excellent biography of James Dean Bradfield

Three things you should listen to: Good advice (ha ha), Manic Street Preachers and the weather forecast

Three things you should never listen to: Politicians, ITV “news” and the weather forecast

Three things I’d like to learn: French, why people at York love the philosophy of John Rawls so bloody much and where all the sheilds are in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (PS2)

Three favourite foods: Tart’s spagetti, pistache ice cream and fruit cake

Three beverages I drink regularly: Coffee, Earl Grey tea and diet coke

Three TV shows/books I watched/read as a kid: Willo-the-Whisp, Why The Whales Came and Mr Benn

A tale of no quark

Ian Richardson as Francis Q.It is cold and very wet here in the beautiful South West. Oh well, it is, after all, February! We are intent on a sleepy weekend this one and as such Mr C is still in his dressing gown under the duvet on the sofa. Nice. He has now emerged to make ciabatta mix for a home-made pizza. I’ve been out driving and plodded in the rain to Lidl for mozarella light and Bissou yoghurts, to which I am currently addicted. My other addiction, cherry quark, was not available. Again. As you can see, nothing of note to report, so I will close and enjoy watching Chicken cook!

P.S. It was sad to see that Ian Richardson had passed away yesterda. Just as he said of the Iron Lady in his most famous role, “nothing lass forever”…

Will we get there?!

Arlington CourtStill no snow here. We managed a lovely walk around Arlington, skirting the house and heading down to the lakes and trees at the bottom of the park. Henry, my brother’s springer, was in and out of the water all the way round and having a brilliant time! We then headed up to the formal gardens and church, both were very quiet as - we later discovered - there was tree felling going on! We avoided the rain most of the way round, but just as we were commenting on this we got quite wet. We went to warm up over a very pleasant lunch in Ilfracombe.

We are hoping the snow will clear from Buckinghamshire and the south-east over the week so that our trip there next weekend will be able to go ahead. Finger’s crossed, as we are looking forward to seeing Chicken’s siblings and, of course, Spamalot!

There are not many plans for over the weekend, hopefully ordering the rings, going for lunch with Mum today and general laziness. Oh, and shaking off this blooming cough as well!
