Revolutionary Rants

Because Everything's Political

Bigot brother

This series of Celebrity Big Brother has finally put us off watching. Obviously, with all the fuss we have seen bits of it all over the news, including that charming young “lady” know only for showing off her breasts at any opportunity, cheating at Miss UK (for goodness sake…) and boffing Teddy Sheringham, declaring that Shilpa Shetty should “f**k off home” partly because she “Can’t speak English properly, anyway”… Personally I find Shetty’s English considerably more understandable that the thick scouse drawl of this particular nobody. The whole thing is too painful to watch and an awful reminder that the UK has not progressed too far from the days of Enoch Powell… One can just hope the British public will vote with their remotes and stop watching or, at a pinch, vote of the horrific Jade Goody. At least, in a way, it has brought this issue in to conversation and discussion.

The gales have really hit North Devon harshly. I woke up at 3:30am to the sound of the window shaking and tins flying around outside. It is not much better now, either…

Aha, the “I didn’t watch it, but…” ploy.
I think the really worrying thing is not so much the racism angle, being played up by the politicians, but that good old combination of schoolyard bullying and a powerful ringleader carrying all before her. Jade seems to be carrying a chip the size of ‘East Anglia’ on her shoulder, and has taken it into her head that ‘Princess’ is putting on airs and graces, rather than as she is, behaving politely though possibly letting herself slip too much into the house vernacular. The, to me, really worrying character is her boyfriend Jack, who I would not be surprised turns up as a BNP member in the near future; he is being very sneaky and stirring Jade up.
The other worrying part is the apparent reluctance of the other housemates to step in, and intervene, for example couldn’t someone have suggested cooking half the chicken for longer…
Having said all that the slide into racism is not far off, though it is more the petty cultural stuff than outright hate-crime at the moment. On BBC2’s Newsnight last night I had to agree that it was being blown up out of proportion, but also it is the knock on effect, not the actual event that will cause the real trouble.
I know very little about any of the contestants, but as Endemol portrays them, no one is coming out too well. I would be horrified however if Jade doesn’t get voted off tonight. Poor Davina, having to do that interview. Jade’s performance this week has, amazingly, made her mother look good.

Paul Morley said the same thing about Jack Tweedy (maybe it is something about that surname that leads to racist outbursts?! Thinking of Cheryl and the toilet that’s all been quietly forgotten about now…) on CBBLB (which I have still been watching, I must admit). As you say, the bullying thing is perhaps more to the point than the race thing, in that Jade is a bully and the other two brainless wonders (Jo and the ex-Miss UK) are the actually racists ones. Who’d have thunk anyone could make Jackiey look good… Finger’s crossed for a Jade eviction – if she doesn’t go it would say alot about this country!!! Plus, it’d be a good birthday treat for me!
