The Beautiful South

The South’s greatest hitsA sad day, as one of my favourite bands, the Beautiful South, have split after nineteen years together (in differing forms, including three seperate female lead singers). They will be missed. Well, by me and Alex at any rate!

I will write a review of Bobby tomorrow when I have had time to muse on it and perhaps come to like it a bit better… Perhaps…

The middle of the week

A wallThere is a nursing home directly across from Chicken and I’s house, which our street is separated from by a 10 foot (ish) wall. I have just seen a bloke walking along the top of said wall. I think he’s removing lichin, but either way I hope he won’t come plummeting down in the meantime…

Sorry about the lack of posts the last couple of days, I’ve been busy with addaction, cycling, filling in annoyingly complex applications, reading and general stuff (like making soup, for example). Today I am off to avail of Orange Wednesdays with my Mum and see Bobby about the RFK assassination.

Apparently Dreamworks has dropped Aardman and the latest Wallace & Gromit film after “losing money” on the Curse of the Ware-Rabbit. Shocking. Well, i hope that the new film makes millions and it is one in the eye for Dreamworks!

The last day of January… where has the month gone? It seems like only five seconds since we were in Bristol on the first day of the year. Time flies, as they say.

Return of the Hamster

The HamsterI have had some sad news about my old Division at Huddersfield today, one of our original lecturers is leaving soon under rather complex circumstances. He will be greatly missed, I am sure. The Division is almost unrecognisable from the day in September 2001 when joined, and I am not sure that this is in a good way. For one thing, I would not be joining the course now as you can no longer complete a degree in a department solely based around Politics. A shame…

Yesterday was quiet, as I mentioned in my last post. In the evening we were torn away from the CBB final to watch Top Gear and the return of Richard ‘The Hamster’ Hammond to the show post-crash. Hammond’s crash was quite scary to see, with the tyre clearly going and all the prior runs leaving you wincing, especially when he cried “I feel so alive, so alive!” Still, at least he is still so alive! We then enjoyed seeing Shilpa Shetty triumph over the bullies, who were conspicuous in their absence.

Cynicism could be linked to heart illness. Oh dear, I am probably done for, then…

Apparently only 36% of parents read to their children in the South West, the lowest in the country. What a sad state of affairs, I used to love being read to as a child and when I wasn’t being read to by Dad I listened to ‘talking books’ as well. Being read to is brilliant, come on parents!

Well, I have some Addaction business today, so I will close now.

Black sheep and witnesses

BaaaaTime to try out the all new Word Press. With spell check; hooray, hooray! Looks good so far, doesn’t it?

Yesterday was quite quiet in general. We headed over to Swimbridge to make further enquiries about the licence for the Hall and getting some Black Sheep Ale for the reception, all of which went well. I then had a bit of a drive with my Dad in what will be our Wagon R.

In the evening we cooked a home-made curry, which wasn’t spicy enough for us. I started my new book, A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian. It is, so far, interestingly written and readable.

There was some sad news as half of Mr C’s “best man team” (Aram Chicken’s school pal, who was going to be the witness at the wedding) will not be able to make it over for the wedding as he can can’t get holiday from work. A real shame. Still, we have, thus far, been lucky with our turn-out and most excitingly Granny and Grandpa (as well as Aunt and cousin) are intending to come from Poland! And Charles can’t back out of his speech duties! We hope… Heehee.

Oh well, a trip to the evil capitalist shop awaits and then the cooking of some of Roger Boot’s famous “flaming chicken” for my old Boot. Plus I will certainly find time in this hectic schedule to laugh out loud a few times at John Reid’s career following in the wake of Blunko’s. Fantastic!

Proud to be a bitch!

Bitch!Ah, Friday again. My title is a nod to this article, by the way…

I finished my book last night and am now amongst the frustrated many that await Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Is Snape really evil? Will Hermione and Ron ‘get it on’ (what a horrible phrase that is…)? Will Neville (my favourite character, I must admit) survive? Is Harry a horcrux, containing a piece of Voldermort’s soul?!?! And there is as yet no release date on the book. Dammit!

Yes, I am actually twenty-four… You can be twenty-four and read Harry Potter and watch Watership Down and Willo-the-wisp obsessively!

A quiet weekend awaits, hopefully, with a bit of wedding planning and driving practice thrown in for good measure.

Would you like me… To be the prat?

I know I have often said that the left would be in a much more powerful position than the right if only we’d all stop fighting with one another and concentrate on the real “enemy”. But, despite having said this I just have to have a rant about George Galloway. The man really is a prat.

He was on The Wright Stuff on Five this morning still harping on about how it is ‘more important’ for him to be on telly than it is to be in the Commons. He then took pot-shots at the PM for not being there and because he constantly went for the PR person’s prerogative . Pot, kettle and black are words that spring to mind…

No, George, it is not all that important, it is merely shameless self-promotion. You obviously cannot be bothered with local level politics in your constituency (as, of course, it was more important to ‘connect’ with younger voters via the medium of television than it was to be around for an important transport bill regarding his own seat… No, transport bills are not sexy enough for gorgeous George).

Like Ken Livingstone (although his is to a lesser degree) and Arthur Scargill Galloway is a lefty who ends up shooting himself in the foot constantly because what he is really interested in is George Galloway. The sort of person who stood around shouting about not selling out as Mandelson and Campbell got hold of the Labour Party and screwed it over, made it “New”.

But, then again, as Chicken never tires of telling me, when the revolution comes it will be televised…

Quiet but cold

It is freezing today. It was noticeably warmer yesterday but today the chill is most definitely back. Hence I have been keeping busy out and about - it is warmer wrapped up in coat and scarf walking round than on the sofa, even under the duvet!

I have also been quiet on the blogging front because most of my free time has been taken up with reading Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Sad, i know, but now I am into it I require to know what is going to happen (although Alex has told me quite a lot of the plot-lines already - why did I ask?!).

Nothing much else to report; just being happy, boring and cold…

P. S. This is a very interesting story, which I have just been watching about on C4 news.

Ice, ice baby

Brrrrrr. It is cold. Very cold indeed. I suppose we have got away with an extremely mild winter so far, but that was no bad thing… Although it is a bad thing really, of course, as it is another symptom of global warming.

I finished my training yesterday, so next it to go ‘in to the field’. I am really looking forward to that and it should hopefully be in the next few weeks.

Today I shall be avoiding the cold as much as possible. Chicken has gone off to work wrapped up in his Yorkshire parka coat, which hasn’t seen the light of day for a couple of years. He has picked a bad week to leave his normal coat in his driving instructor’s car…

Devon is all over the national news after the ’sinking’ of the Napoli and the subsequent scavenging of large amount of loot. It is quite amusing, seeing tractors scooting off with large motorbikes on the back. Less amusing if your in charge of the wreak, I’d imagine.

Red hot chilli pepper

I have had chilli pepper juice stuck under my right thumb nail since yesterday evening. Jeez, it hurts. I have tried cleaning it, scraping it etc etc, all to no avail. The home-made pizza was almost worth it, though.

It has been a quiet weekend here, yesterday we ventured to evil capitalist shop and spent the rest of the day doing very little other than reading the papers and cooking home-made pizzas. Today, we have just returned from a visit to my Nan’s and plan to spend the rest of the day being lazy.

The most taxing item on my agenda is trying to decide whether to go for the rock or the hard place tonight at nine… Y’see I have formally enjoyed both Waking the Dead and, even more so, Trial & Retribution but they are both now pretty damn awful. The plot summery for WTD seems even more far fetched than the bizarre - and, dare I say it post-Jade, somewhat racist (the Beeb hasn’t realised that “Pikey” is still not a post-modern ironic name for Irish travelers, evidently) - plot of the one a week or so ago. But then i just cannot face T&R since the truly bloody awful Victoria Smurfitt joined the cast. She makes Madonna look like a talented actress she is so extremely bad… So, rock and hard place. Maybe I’ll just read instead!

A birthday post

The 19th of January. My birthday. I am now 24. Oooh ‘eck, as they say up in Yorkshire (altho’ I think it may have been only me and Wallace that ever uttered it…). Time to change my “About Me” page once again.

So far so good, I have a large pot of proper coffee in front of me, which I am greatly enjoying, and I have had my first few cards (and icard…) and a small but very nice selection of gifts. Slipper ‘boots’, which I have been hankering after for my icey feet, a black and red (my colours!) scarf, money and from Mr C a special edition La Haine DVD and the Pride and Prejudice (2004) sound track (I also already have a new exercise bike for me and C from Mum and Dad). He is also cooking for me tomorrow (tonight we have a leaving ‘do’ to attend - in the pub!), which is always a treat because he is a more patient and skilled chef than me!

We seem to have survived the wind so far. On my trip to the library yesterday there were a few smashed tiles/slates on the pavement on the Promenade, so not too drastic considering Barnstaple got some of the worst gusts (73mph) according to the BBC. Other people were not so lucky, of course, which is awful. What have we done to the weather?

I must admit, following a conversation with my brother-in-law (to be) that I returned to watch Big Brother (minus the hugely annoying Carphone W. adverts in between everything!) last night. I am no longer sure about Jade not being racist after her surname offering, but either way I am baying for blood tonight! I still agree with the comments of yesterday that the bullying thing is almost worse than the racist ‘undertones’. As usual with bullying the bullies pick on something that it important to their victim, a part of their life or make-up as a person, and it is horrible to see that this still goes on in adult life.

Oh well, I have a birthday to enjoy! Happy birthday to me, happy birt… la la.
