Revolutionary Rants

Because Everything’s Political

London and History

Sandra and I have decided to be spontanious - something we rarely are these days! - and go to London for the weekend. We found VERY cheap tickets from Midland Mainline and will be staying in the same hotel my Mum and I stayed in on a previous trip to the capital.

We are rather over excited about it all! We are not sure what we will do yet, but galleries, possible theatre trips, Arsenal FC’s grounds and much more seems highly likely!

Yesterday I got the train to Slaitwaite just outside Huddersfield with a friend. Then we walked the three or so miles up the canal to Marsden (a former luddite strong hold) and visited the Riverhead Brewery Tap. This is such a smashing pub, which brews it’s own beers and a strange but interesting cider called Saxon (as well as Scrumpy Jack, a favourite of mine). We sat outside and enjoyed the blazing sunshine (plenty of aftersun cream last night, I can tell you), booze and a nice chat with the landlord and some locals. All that and the conductor didn’t charge us for the extra bit on our train ride home! A highly recommended day out to any of you, but apparently it is best to avoid weekends if you can due to the high number of visitors then.

Sometimes I really love Yorkshire!

Last night I also started wantching The History Man on BBC4. It is the adaptio of Malcolm Burgess’ 1975 book, which I read just prior to coming to University. So far I am enjoying it, and I think the message it holds, although perhaps dated a little by the Sociolgist slant, is still very true today! Anthony Sher, as the repulsive Howard Kirk, is perhaps a tad greasy, but I suppose he was greasy anyway. I amlooking forward to next weeks - definitly better than The Apprentice anyway (and Kirk is considerably more human than Alan Suger, that’s for sure)!
