The film of the musical of the film of ‘The Producers’ is out today. I am really looking forward to seeing it - especially after enjoying the stage version so much last year - but I can’t help but think it is all a tad wrong at the same time! I am a little dubious of some of the casting: Nathan Lane was great, if a tad camp, as Bialystock, and I think Matthew ‘Ferris Bueller’ Broderick will be a good - although not Gene Wilder standard - Leo Bloom. But I am really not sure Uma Thurman is a Ulla. Worst than that though is the idea of Will Farrell as the former-Nazi, Hitler-adoring German writer of the play! That, I can’t help but think, will just not work… Although I try, as a rule, not to be overly conservative in outlook, on this occasion I have to wonder why if it ain’t broke, why fix it? |
