Revolutionary Rants

Because Everything’s Political

You’re Making me very anxious…

The film of the musical of the film of ‘The Producers’ is out today. I am really looking forward to seeing it - especially after enjoying the stage version so much last year - but I can’t help but think it is all a tad wrong at the same time!

I am a little dubious of some of the casting: Nathan Lane was great, if a tad camp, as Bialystock, and I think Matthew ‘Ferris Bueller’ Broderick will be a good - although not Gene Wilder standard - Leo Bloom. But I am really not sure Uma Thurman is a Ulla. Worst than that though is the idea of Will Farrell as the former-Nazi, Hitler-adoring German writer of the play! That, I can’t help but think, will just not work…

Although I try, as a rule, not to be overly conservative in outlook, on this occasion I have to wonder why if it ain’t broke, why fix it?

Monopoly

MonopolyMonopoly is monopolising our lives at present! Yesterday I won hands down - unleashing the evil capitalist within! - today I lost just as resoundingly!!!

Other than that life is Christmas preparation (I made my nut roast today, instilled, even now, with the feeling that I should be off home soon. We also decorated the tree), dog walking and food.

Tomorrow it is Chicken’s dad’s 70th birthday, so don’t expect any posting until after the 25th!

Back in the bourgeois

After a 6:30am start yesterday we are now in the South of France (which my friend calls my ‘bourgeois retreat’!). Today we went to Nice and ate pizza and walked the Promenade des Anglais. And went to damn Fnac, which was a pre-Christmas crush and hot as a sauna.

There was a distinct lack of pistache ice cream though.

So, time to go to the cottage and read before watching some of ‘Lost’ series deux.

Only took five days…

Draft one is done! And it only took five days. OK, so it would have been quicker if it wasn’t the first essay I had written in almost two years and I had been able to get my head in to writing the bloody thing earlier! But, hey, it is done now, although I think my conclusion needs reworking.

But currently, I am having a break. I will try to sort out my Locke notes tomorrow, before heading off to watch the Arsenal at 14:00. But, today, I have just been packing, buying parsnips, surfing, tidying, spending time with friends, phoning people and drinking red wine…

Smashing.

Real-ly bad

OK, so I was in a better mood again. The sun was shining (after a night of fierce winds and lashing rain). I had woken, at the lovely hour of 9:00am to a peaceful house full of happy sleepers aware they had handed in assignments (Chris and Andy) and had completed exams (my other two housemates). I was happy, knowing only 1,000 words, a few read throughs and a bit of chopping down awaited me on the essay I had began to actually really write yesterday. Furthermore, I knew that all my Christmas shopping (I say mine, as I did mine and Chris’ entirely this year, well, except his Mum’s gifts which he brought!) was done and wrapped.

Then, at 11am the European Champion’s League draw was made…

And Arsenal got Real Madrid

WHY?

Merry Christmas everyone…

Sartre was right…

SartreHell is other people.

You an get up, full of happiness and ready to face the day - of essay writing - and just one word from some else can bring you down with a bump. One news article, one BBC daily e-mail reading - yet again - ‘Newcastle 1 - Arsenal 0′.

It is usually people though. Hell is certainly them.

Telly observations

Ohmigod, I would not have believed two days ago that David Tennant could be such a ham! As I mentioned before, I sat down to watch ‘Secret Smile’ on Monday and Tuesday, and there went three hours of my life I will never get back. Predictable and, in fact, utterly shite!

Why oh why, when two women are killed each week by ex partners can television not produce a true to life tale of domestic violence (except for the brilliant Trip Trap’ a whole 9 years ago). This was here also coupled with a ‘psycho stalker’ style twist, but it also failed on this by making this part of the plot OTT also. It also twisted manic depression in to a weird subplot. It is funny how so many programmes now seem to carry the message ‘bad things will happen to women who sleep with people and enjoy it but don’t want to shack up with them forever’… Reinforced by Trinny and Susanna tonight when they told a woman ‘you won’t get a man who wants to hang around if you are dressed like a slut‘.

Even David was terrible, although I struggled on to the end…

Earl Grey

I am currently obsessed by Earl Grey tea… I am just starting my forth cup of the day. It gets me through my essay writing!!! Well, one good thing, at least I am only having one cup of coffee a day.

Search in vain

SearchingToday at lunch I paused for - you guessed it - pesto and a bit of a surf (and, of course, Channel 4 lunchtime news). I was trying to find a last item or two for Chris’ Christmas present pile (alliteration all the way…) and had wanted to get him the Audrey Tautou film Le Battement d’ailes du papillon (as it is titled Amelie 2 in South Korea - despite coming out in 2000, before the ‘original’!!! - I thought it would be right up his street).

I searched, and searched, and searched, and searched, and searched, and searched, and searched, and searched, and searched. But all to no avail; play, amazon, cd-wow, they all let me down. Only Fnac and French amazon had it - and, of course, only in French (which is alright for Chicken, but he never watches anything on his own, so…)!!! Oh, and American amazon, too…

In the end I got so frustrated I had to tell him all about it!

Writing

Sorry things have been quiet here, that is mainly because I have had little to say! Chicken and I have been preparing for Christmas, including a visit to my brother’s to exchange gifts and spend time with the kids, and I have been finishing off my first term at York.

Now I have two 5,000 word essays to write, one of which is tentatively under way as of today!

Update: I have now (at 19:07), so far, written 1,633 words and have lots more to go! Quite soon I will be stopping to watch Secret Smile on the trashy but nice ITV…
