Revolutionary Rants

Because Everything’s Political

What ever happened to feminism?

After the awful findings I write about here last week on the blame for rape according to the “great” British public I didn’t think things could get anymore depressing in a post-feminist world.

But then, as I was trying to formulate my first essay plan, listening for light - very light - relief to Yorkshire’s Real Radio and an advert came on… for breast enlargement.

OK, so this is bad enough, but it was how the advert ran that most repulsed and depressed me. Firstly a excited man talks to a female friend who’s had her tits done, and then his partner comes on saying something like ‘heehee, Dave, you know it is my birthday soon…?’ and he goes ‘Ah! OK… What’s the number of that plastic surgeon again?’.

HIDEOUS!

This is the world we are living in folks - where women are supposed to want their breast enlarged for their birthday.

Just makes me all the more certain on what I want for my birthday: a bottle of Jack Daniels!!!!!!!!!

Winter wonder land!

Snow in YorkshireJust for a few minutes, a little while ago it SNOWED!!!

The sky is grey, there is a thin layer of grainy white snow on the road; maybe they’ll be a thick covering later?

It is very exciting. Until I won’t be able to get to York, then I’ll be fuming!

Update:It is now snowing very heavily!

Update two:But as soon as it laid it all melted in about 3 seconds!

Asking for it

Back again (it never rains, but it pours…!). I forgot about this - for a nice moment or two - but when I remembered, I thought I needed to write something about it all.

I find this report one of the most frightening and repulsive things I have come across in years. 26% is, as my friend at University said yesterday ‘one in four people - that means a lot of my friends actually think that way’.

Rape is about one thing: a rapist’s need for power over the person they are raping. Not about mini-skirts, or Bacardi Breezers, or flirting, or how many people someone has slept with. None of those, just power.

Reading that report makes me think things like this are all the more important.

The Hansom Cab

The pubI must repeat myself yet again. University is shatteringly tiring, I am working all hours of the day/evening and when I get free time it is for Chicken or my friends to use up.

I don’t really have a huge amount of news, other than tomorrow Chris’ mum and dad are visiting, which is nice - but I’ll be in York all day! Typical.

Also, if you happen to be heading to York at any time soon, and you are looking for a good hostelry, try The Hansom Cab. It is very Victorian in aspect - you think Jack the Ripper might bump in to you on his way to Whitechaple as you enter the door - and serves German and local (Tadcaster) beers for about £1.60 to £2.00! Plus, the bar staff are lovely. Give it a try!

Also, give this a go!

A working class hero is something to be

Today I worked a long, long hard day - on my feet non-stop - ushering people through the gowning and photo process at the University of Huddersfield’s graduation ceremonies.

It was quite amusing mostly; herding people about, shouting directions and manning the lift. However, some graduates and their family members can be very blooming rude! One woman even declared it was ‘like a concentration camp!’ which I thought was a tad over the top…

We had a half hour of darkness when I returned home, as the power went out in our area. All the house alarms were ringing out. One thing I find spooky is, having lived in Ireland - free of street lights - the way the sky is still red with light even when parts of the town are blacked out.

Time for ‘Macbeth’ now, and a bit of reading of MacIntyre, I suppose!

Be Tolerant

Yes, yes. But I’ve been very busy. I know I keep saying that, but it is true. I am reading non-stop and trying to pull together ideas for my essays. On top of that I am trying to maintain my social life!

This Tuesday at the University of York it is the J. B. Morrell talk on toleration, which will this year be given by Professor Lord Parekh. I am looking forward to it.

It is annoying as it is a beautiful crisp day but I am stuck in having to read… Boo hiss.

Oh, yes, and go and look at Chicken’s new site.
