Sunny days on the Côte d’Azur

Well, the sun has been out for the last few days of our stay here in Tourrette. On Monday afternoon, Chicken and I were given a lift to spend an hour or so in Cannes (the one place, other than Grasse, still on my ‘tourist list’ of places yet to visit). We walked along the promenade to look at the scary brown ladies and posh hotels before going to the Palais des Festivals (home to the film festival annually) and viewing the hand prints of the likes of Gregory Peck and Ken Loach. Like Monaco, Cannes is good to visit but a bit strange, over-tanned and over priced!

Nice is much nicer, and that is where we went yesterday. We caught the bus down, which took an unusually long time (nearly an hour and a half) although the Promenade des Anglais was surprisingly empty!

We went straight off for lunch at our favourite pizza place on the Cours Saleya in the old town. I had a wonderful one, featuring capers, paisley sauce and anchovies as well as a quart of red wine. Delicious, only spoiled by the out-of-tune ’singing’ of the hag who goes round the eateries of Nice squawking pre-war French songs in a shriek. We then went round the shops, including Chicken’s favourite Fnac.

After that we headed to the beautiful blue sea. The beach was absolutely packed; we seemed to be the only people trying to change under towels as others sat around with their breasts on full display! The sea was great and we swam for a long time, keeping one eye on our rucksack all the while!

Afterwards we went to a long time haunt, Nocy Be, a Moroccan style cafe, for a shisha pipe and a mint tea.

Then, we walked over to the English church and went home with Mr C’s dad. Well, we also stopped off in the supermarket, Leclerc, to get essentials like wine, capers and anchovies!

A lovely day.
