Revolutionary Rants

Because Everything’s Political

Friday night, Saturday morning

There is something magical about Saturdays. I don’t understand it. Even when I was not working, or even when I was and had to get up and put on my greasy work top and cap and head to the Student’s Union cafe, I have always loved the feeling of waking up and it being a Saturday. Who knows why. Maybe it is because of the football, the papers, the car boot/jumble sales, or last year at least perhaps because it was the day before the day before Mr C had to go to work again.

It is a mystery. Sunday is different, less good somehow, that is also a mystery.

Oh well, later on Chicken and I will head over to my Nan’s to sort our stuff for the return to Huddersfield. Yesterday I did most of the packing for our imminent trip over to Tourrette to spend Chicken’s 21st birthday en famille (don’t think my French has improved, Chicken spelt that out for me!). The summer is coming to an end, and it feels quite exciting.

Last night we saw Mike Leigh’s ‘Vera Drake’, which was an interesting watch. The film was beautifully shot, making you feel enclosed and almost trapped within the picture throughout, and the acting - in particular Phil Davis as Stan Drake, Vera’s husband - was brilliant. Sadly the films message of the difficulty and degradation of working class women who had to get abortions compared to richer women, was a little lost by Vera being an absolute saint. She didn’t even accept payment for her ’services’. If she had been a bit more realistic the message would have hit home much more, being less sentimental. But, either way, it was well worth a view.
