Because Everything's Political

Tony Liar

What on Earth are the Tories doing?

I mean, it is great for those of us who – despite not being overly fond of Mr Blair or any other political party – would love to see out the rest of our days without having another Conservative government, but surely, the Tories do actually want to win the election…

Don’t they?

The problem with their campaign, as most commentators have been saying for the last few weeks, is that they are not talking about the Conservatives and what they’ll do (even their manifesto was a broken-down – or perhaps mushed up like baby food? – short bullet-pointed affair) but about how bad Tony Blair is. Note this, it isn’t New Labour that they are attacking, but Tony Blair. They are treating people – why am I surprised? They are the Tories after all – like they are utterly stupid. Blair does as well, of course, but at least he isn’t stood around pointing the finger at the leader of his main opposition going ‘you’re crap! You’re a liar!’

No wonder people are turned off politics – this election is not political it is just a bought of name calling in what is fast becoming a one party state…

P.S. Oh and another thing Mr Howard, leave your simpering wife out of it why don’t you? She doesn’t make you look more human, just even more ineffectual…

I had a nice Conservative lady knock on my door last evening. I had to say that I probably wouldn’t be voting for her (sitting) candidate, mainly on his anti-foreigner posture (see Jess’s earlier post on the complicated national mix in her background. She was, I think, in agreement and I have to say was not seeming very excited by her canvassing experiences. She did half-heartedly mention Dover, but her heart wasn’t really in it.
I agree re the name calling and the Today prog gets ever more tedious. But a one party state, well what was it under 12 years of Tory rule? Labour then looked pretty ineffectual too.
You rather spoil the effect by criticising Mrs Howard; after all she is only aping Cherie, as is the current political fashion, copying the US.
Looking forward to the next bout!

I quite agree with your point about Mrs Howard – it is only aping Cherie, Babs and the Heinz heiress. And look where that got Cherie/Labour… I think the sad thing is, the British public love-to-hate Cherie because she always (despite being an amazingly well paid and high-up barrister) comes across as rather silly, that Mr Blair always seems a little ashamed of her, and because, lets face it, she isn’t all that beautiful. Sandra Howard gets away with it all because she was a former model (so, Mr Howard must love her completely, how couldn’t he?!) and she was married three times before falling for the Count and has hence shared his coffin for the past 30 years. As you say, all very cynical, just like in the US. Perhaps I should just leave the wives out of it – although i feel most sorry for Mrs Kennedy, as she is stuck at home whilst her hubby swans round canvassing. As I told Chris the other night, ‘you’re taking every minute of paternity leave when we have kids!’ – and isn’t that a Lib Dem policy, to increase pat. leave?! Hmmm… Talk about practising what you preach, eh?

I also agree on the one party state comment – we have had a one party state since ‘consensus politics’ went out of the window. It is just these days the British voters chooses a mid-to-right wing governemnt rather than the right-right-right of Mrs T!
