Revolutionary Rants

Because Everything’s Political

Tony Liar

What on Earth are the Tories doing?

I mean, it is great for those of us who – despite not being overly fond of Mr Blair or any other political party – would love to see out the rest of our days without having another Conservative government, but surely, the Tories do actually want to win the election…

Don’t they?

Why does it always rain on me?

Yesterday was a long day…

Having originally woken with Mr Chicken at 6:40 am and dozing there after, I got up and ready and left the house at 10 am. I stood patiently with all the other passengers waiting on platform 3, until our train pulled in to platform 7 and we all went running at the ‘platform alteration’ announcement. We all boarded and I got a seat all on my own, settling for a three and a half hour tow up through Oxford, Banbury, Lemington Spa, Coventry, Birmingham International, Brimingham New Street, Derby and finally arriving in Sheffield at around 14:30 (a little late).

A week near Provence

Chris and I enjoyed a relaxed weekend, safe in the knowledge that the week was work – or indeed job-hunting – free.

On Monday we collected all our holiday items together, and headed in to town to catch the Rail Air bus. After what seemed a very quick journey, we arrived at Heathrow. We checked in our bags, and after a quick caramel Frescata from our favourite coffee shop we headed to departures. Chris, of course, was tempted to buy an hour of net time, so I wandered around the little Harrods shop for a laugh. It seemed like five minutes until our flight was called and we headed off, slightly late, for Nice.

A brief note

Well, we are back – both in the internet and the home sense, after a small server difficulty and a short holiday in Tourrette with Chris’ parents.

BMI were very good, as they always have been when we use them, and we got back early today; so now I am settled on the sofa with my Sunday paper and a cup of tea. Lovely stuff! I will write more tomorrow, when Chris is off in London on his course.

It is not OK computer

I am slightly annoyed – once again, as I am every time I do this – at spending four hours of my life watching ‘The 100 Greatest Albums‘ on Channel 4 last night.

Now, don’t get me wrong, the programme was quite enjoyable – especially listening to how great Oasis still think they are – and had all the usual listomania, but the list itself was as slanted and aggravating as ‘The Big Read’ turned out to be (and the ‘100 Great Cartoons’, and the ‘100 Greatest Sexiest Moments’, etc. etc.). I mean, I love Radiohead (although you only get the full impact of them live, not on CD), but there is no way that ‘OK Computer’ is the greatest flaming album of all time! I am sorry, but NO!

Va va voom!

We are in to the FA Cup final!!!!!!!!!

Brilliant!

A good solid 3-0 win over Blackburn (mind you, it is only Blackburn – sorry Al!) has set us on the path to Cardiff!

Plus, the World Snooker Championships have started, Ronnie O’Sullivan is just in the lead (5-4) after the first session against bright young thing Stephen Maguire, but from what I saw earlier he was not yet on the form on last year… Finger’s crossed for the Rocket anyway!

Things are quiet here, we are just getting ready for our time in France, which we are really excited about! Also, I got an interview for Sheffield, so I am chuffed.

‘Liberal fascism’

Today the new Robert Kilroy-Silk, erm, sorry I mean Veritas, party launched their ‘manifesto’. Mr Kilroy-Silk use his podium to decry the ‘liberal fascists in London’ and the ‘multi-culturalists’; claiming that ‘no one had voted for Britain to become multi-cultural. This protestation really sticks in the throat, as Britain has always – more or less – been a multi-cultural society; we all have roots in various cultures – be in Roman, Norman, Anglo-Saxon, Irish, Pakistani, Polish, Romany, or, indeed, our current largest immigration groups (whatever Mr Kilroy-Silk and the Murdoch press may say) Australians and Americans.

Also, one of the main reasons for immigration in this country is because we the Commonwealth – which, less we forget, was our own choice to ‘control’ – and because we as a nation needs immigration.

4 X 4 (or should that be 666?)

This morning Chris and I woke up and breakfasted with BBC1 News, as usual. Today, in the election issues on a motorcycle (random… At least on the six o’clock programme they get a bus) part of the wake-up show, they had a section about 4 X 4’s in the city of London.

This is certainly one issue that does get the blood-boiling! They looked at a school run and saw lots of the preposterous vehicles in inner-city London. No, I am not one of these people that says ‘they should all be banned!’ as I can see farmers and those who use them for their actual purpose (driving in and across the country with large loads) do really need them. However, people in towns and (the usual culprits – despite the fact that if one of these beasts hit a small child they would kill instantly) mothers delivering one little child to pre-school DO NOT!!!

I’m alright Tone!

Since the days of Mrs Thatcher there has been a huge emphasis on opposition as a core issue in British elections. A strange switch occurred when Labour changed from ‘Labour’ to ‘New Labour’ under first Neil Kinnock and John Smith, and then more completely under Tony Blair; British politics moved from having one left-wing party and one right-wing one to having two Tory parties. Thus, new opposition was created; parties such as the British National Party, UKIP or Respect provided a ‘voice’ for some of those marginalised by the Third Way.

Now we enter an election with, unlike previous votes, a deeply disenfranchised electorate. But when do these people turn? New Labour grip, steadfastly on to the fact that they are now an established government, trying to gloss over the Iraq war whilst pointing out – the old Tory chestnut – how good their economic record is! Their slogan for the forth-coming general election is ‘Britain Forward Not Back’.

There’s something of the night about that duck…

Mandarin duckYesterday Chicken and I went to Tesco, which meant cycling along the river. We went along to Sonning first, and then back along, over the canal to Tesco. After our shop we headed home, only to see a Mandarin duck [see picture]! I haven’t seen one of these since I was a child, when there was a pair that lived on a park pond in Chesterfield, and – that I can recall – never one at all in the wild. There are lots of interesting birds on the Thames near us – including lots of herons and cormorants – but this was the best sighting I have made since the last adder that slivered past!

We have had a nice relaxing weekend, with lots of cycling, and rather too many trips to Tesco (due to our blender braking mid-cook!).
